When deciding between vinyl and other types of fencing it is important to take into consideration your long term plans. Having been in the fence industry for many years, I have learned that to a realtor a fence is a fence when it comes to a homes resale value. For this reason I like to use ten years as a good long term goal for customers considering vinyl fencing. If your plans are to not be in your current home for more than ten years it may not be cost effective for you to consider vinyl. If however your long term plans are to be in this home for a long time, then vinyl will provide years of worry free use. It is virtually maintenance free except for the occasional pressure washing.

Vinyl fencing unlike most other fencing can be quite confusing. There are many grades and manufacturers of vinyl and it is important to once again consider your long term plans when considering what grade of vinyl fence to install. There are retail grades, typically sold in Home Depot's and Lowe's type stores and there are a more durable commercial grade vinyl fence used by quality fence companies. The major difference is retail grade vinyl has glued panels as opposed to commercial grade which is usually precision routed. The key advantages of precision routed vinyl are long term durability (the glued panels have a tendency to come unglued), and precision routed panels are able to flow with the grade of the land better. You can have up to 8 inches of grade between the front end and the back end of a panel, without having to stair step your vinyl fence
